Along the way, you will pedal past lush, terraced rice paddies, explore ethnic minority villages, and experience authentic local hospitality, making it the ultimate expedition for passionate cyclists seeking both adventure and cultural discovery.
Day 1 — Arrive Luang Prabang
Arrive in Luang Prabang and meet your cycling team for a relaxed sunset warm-up ride around the former royal capital. The short ride helps everyone check bikes, adjust to local road conditions, and settle into the rhythm of the journey. In the evening, join an informal route briefing followed by dinner at a local vocational-training restaurant. Meals: Dinner Overnight: Luang Prabang
Day 2 — Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw | 70 km
After a one-hour vehicle transfer, begin riding beside the Nam Ou River toward Pak Mong, where lunch is served. As the afternoon progresses, the valley opens into a dramatic landscape of towering limestone formations. The route gradually reveals why this corner of Laos is so prized by cyclists: quiet roads, river views, and increasingly impressive karst scenery. Meals: Breakfast, lunch Overnight: Nong Khiaw
Day 3 — Nong Khiaw to Muang Khua by Nam Ou River Boat
Leave the bikes behind for one of the trip’s signature experiences: a four-to-five-hour boat journey along a remote section of the Nam Ou River. The waterway winds through forested hills and isolated settlements that are difficult to reach by road. En route, stop at small riverside villages for a closer look at daily life in this secluded part of northern Laos. Meals: Breakfast, lunch Overnight: Muang Khua
Day 4 — Muang Khua to Vietnam Border | 60 km, then transfer to Dien Bien Phu
Today is one of the expedition’s most memorable riding days. Cycle approximately 60 km from Muang Khua through forested terrain and past hill-tribe communities before reaching the Laos–Vietnam border. After immigration formalities, meet the Vietnamese support team and transfer to Dien Bien Phu, a city set in the fertile Muong Thanh Valley. The area is historically significant for its role in the First Indochina War and is also known for local rice production and Tai cultural traditions. Meals: Breakfast, lunch Overnight: Dien Bien Phu
Day 5 — Dien Bien Phu to Tuan Giao | 80 km
Ride from Dien Bien Phu to Tuan Giao through a succession of Tai ethnic villages and open agricultural valleys. Although the day covers 80 km, the terrain is generally manageable, with one notable mountain climb about 15 km outside Dien Bien Phu. This is a day of steady touring rather than technical riding, with plenty of opportunities to observe rural life along the way. Meals: Breakfast, lunch Overnight: Tuan Giao guesthouse
Day 6 — Tuan Giao to Son La | 70 km
A short morning transfer brings you to Pha Din Pass, known locally as the “Heaven and Earth” pass. From its 1,450 m summit, enjoy a roughly 15 km descent through green rice fields and karst valleys. Traffic is light along this stretch, and the road offers classic northwest Vietnam scenery: terraced fields, water buffalo, and villages belonging to Tai and Hmong communities. Meals: Breakfast, lunch Overnight: Son La
Day 7 — Son La to Moc Chau | 45 km
After another brief transfer, enjoy a gentler but equally scenic ride toward Moc Chau. The route descends gradually beneath imposing limestone cliffs before passing through lush terraced rice paddies. The shorter distance makes this a good day to slow down, take photographs, and appreciate the changing highland landscape. Meals: Breakfast, lunch Overnight: Moc Chau
Day 8 — Moc Chau to Mai Chau | 45 km
Today’s ride follows a narrow, peaceful back road into an area strongly associated with Black Tai, or Tai Dam, culture. The route passes plum orchards, cornfields, and tea plantations as it approaches Mai Chau, which sits at around 1,000 m above sea level. The day combines rewarding climbs with spectacular valley views and ends with a night in a local homestay. Meals: Breakfast, lunch Overnight: Mai Chau homestay
Day 9 — Mai Chau to Cuc Phuong National Park | 80 km
Follow the Ma River on an easier day of cycling through a living agricultural landscape of farms, crops, and village activity. The scenery feels timeless, with frequent chances to stop for photos and interaction with local people. In the late afternoon, transfer to Cuc Phuong National Park, one of Vietnam’s most important protected areas and home to the country’s largest remaining primary forest. Visit the Primate Rescue Centre to learn about conservation efforts for endangered species, including the Cat Ba langur. Meals: Breakfast, lunch Overnight: Cuc Phuong bungalow
Day 10 — Cuc Phuong to Hanoi | 40 km, then transfer
For the final ride, pedal about 40 km through Cuc Phuong Forest to the park centre, where you can pause for tea before transferring to Hanoi. This closing section provides a calm contrast to the mountain roads earlier in the journey. Arrive in Vietnam’s capital in the afternoon, where the tour concludes. Meals: Breakfast Overnight: Hanoi
