Cambodia is the successor to the Khmer Empire, which ruled much of the Indochinese Peninsula from the 11th to 14th centuries. Its capital is Phnom Penh. Most Cambodians are Theravada Buddhists of Khmer descent, with minorities including Cham Muslims, ethnic Chinese, Vietnamese, and animist hill tribes.
